Fire & Smoke Detection Systems Built for Early Action

Spot-type smoke detectors provide early warning by responding to smoke particles produced by a fire. Most modern spot detectors use photoelectric light-scattering technology to identify smoke in the protected area. Some are also designed for installation in HVAC ducts.

Proper selection and placement should be based on building conditions and fire load, supported by fire protection specialists and applicable requirements such as NFPA 72.

Air sampling systems provide very early warning by actively drawing air from the protected space through a piping or tubing network into a high-sensitivity detection chamber. Unlike spot detectors, these systems continuously monitor air and can detect fire products at the earliest stages of combustion—often before visible smoke is present.

Air sampling technologies may include:

• Laser (Filtered) – Removes dust and large particles before analysis
• Laser (Particle Counting) – Distinguishes combustion particles from dust without filters
• Cloud Chamber Systems – Older technology with higher maintenance demands

Beam detection is ideal for large open spaces such as atriums, warehouses, hangars, and other high-ceiling environments. These systems project a light beam across the protected area to a reflector and trigger an alarm when smoke obscures the signal.

Beam detection is cost-effective for wide coverage and works well in environments where traditional point detection would be difficult to install or maintain.

Duct smoke detection is commonly required by code for HVAC systems and is used to detect smoke or combustion products moving through ductwork. These devices help prevent smoke recirculation by triggering alarms and initiating shutdown of fans or air handling equipment when smoke is detected.

Duct detector requirements are often tied to NFPA 90A, and accessories may include remote test stations and local annunciators.

Video image smoke and fire detection (VISD) uses digital cameras and analytics software to identify visible smoke and fire patterns in real time. NFPA 72 recognizes VISD, but it must be installed using a performance-based design and UL-listed system components.

VISD is commonly used in large-volume spaces or high-value environments where early situational awareness is critical, and it can provide rapid detection speeds comparable to air sampling in the right applications.

Spot heat detectors activate based on temperature thresholds or rate-of-rise conditions. These devices are typically mounted on ceilings or walls near the ceiling and are often used where smoke detection may not be appropriate.

Heat detection methods may include fixed temperature, rate-of-rise, rate compensation, or combination devices.

Linear heat detection provides a cost-effective solution for specialty applications where spot detection may not be ideal. These systems are often installed inconspicuously and are commonly used in environments such as freezers, warehouses, conveyors, bridges, and chemical storage areas.

Linear heat detection is not intended for small smoldering fires but can be highly effective for the right hazard type and layout.

Flame detectors are designed for high-hazard environments where fire may result in major loss and risk to personnel is high. These systems detect radiant energy—visible, infrared, ultraviolet, or a combination—to identify flames quickly.

Common flame detection types include:

• IR Flame Detection – Effective but may require mitigation of false alarms from hot surfaces
• UV Flame Detection – Extremely fast response, may require time delay to reduce false alarms
• UV/IR Flame Detection – Combines signals to confirm fire and improve reliability

Gas detection supports worker safety and explosion prevention by monitoring for hazardous gas concentrations. When dangerous levels are detected, systems can trigger alarms or initiate automated actions such as ventilation activation, valve shutoff, or process shutdown.
